How many people are LGBT in the U.S.?

A new paper by Gary J. Gates, a distinguished scholar at the Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) estimates that 3.5% of adults living in the U.S. identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual and a further 0.3% are transgender. Overall this suggests that the LGBT population of the United States is approximately 9 million. Furthermore, slightly more people identify as bisexual (1.8%) as compared to those who identify as lesbian or gay (1.7%). A full copy of the paper can be downloaded here.
